Chesterfield Reserves put in a great performance to beat a strong Wolves Reserves team one nil behind closed doors at Saltergate.

The only goal of the game came after just 20 minutes.  Michael Standing charged down a Wolves clearance, ran onto the rebound, and after his first cross was deflected, he coolly slotted the ball across goal from the bye-line for Reuben Wiggins-Thomas to hammer the ball home from close-range.

The whole team played well as a unit but the defence in particular did well to keep a clean sheet.  Michael Jordan made a couple of fine saves from Craig Davies and the central defensive partnership of Janos Kovacs and Jamie Lowry were formidable.  They were well supported by Phil Picken and youngster Josh Law.

The midfield of Reuben Wiggins-Thomas, Michael Standing and Gareth Davies helped keep Wolves at bay and turned defence into attack on many occasions by feeding nifty wide players Jamie Jackson and Adam Smith.  Youth team hat-trick man Jake Williams had his first taste of senior football up front and almost scored in the second-half after a fine run and shot, which went just inches the wrong side of an upright.

Wolves included a number of players with first team experience, including their number two goalkeeper Michael Oakes, as well as, Denes Rosa, Keith Lowe, Charlie Mulgrew and Lewis Gobem.  They also included a couple of loanees, Craig Davies from Italian side Verona and David Wheater from Middlesbrough.

Despite a concerted effort, under the watchful eye of manager Mick McCarthy, Wolves were unable to break down Chesterfield's well-organised defence.  In the closing stages Chesterfield went close again to extending their lead when Michael Standing rifled a great shot just over the bar.  This was closely followed by substitute Jamies O'Brien's fine effort, which appeared to be tipped over by the 'keeper.

Another good work-out for the lads following the 4-3 victory over Coventry City a couple of weeks ago.
