In a hard fought game Leeds United took the lead on the half-hour.  A free kick was floated over Chesterfield's defensive wall into the top corner by Portuguese winger Filipe Da Costa scoring his first goal for Leeds whilst waiting for international clearance.

The goal came after there had been some stout defending by the Spireites, with some good saves from Michael Jordan.  There was a last gasp clearance off the line by Alan O'Hare but minutes later Leeds did score.

Despite the set back, Chesterfield continued to defend with some determination and useful jockeying ensured there was some wayward finishing from the Leeds starlets, watched by their manager Dennis Wise.

Second-half and Chesterfield's dogged performance was the springboard to a fightback.  With fresh legs from four substitutions and some positional changes, the visitors started to make some inroads and with fifteen minutes remaining got an equaliser.

Substitute Adam Smith2 (the younger) nodded the ball through, which gave Jamie Jackson the chance to outpace a defender and steer an angled shot home.

And that was how the scoreline would have stayed but for a defensive lapse in the last minute.  After conceding a free kick just outside the penalty area, Chesterfield's young defenders were caught out by some very quick thinking.

As the Spireites concentrated on organising a defensive wall, the free-kick was quickly taken ahead of any whistle and sailed into the empty net from the boot of Rob Bayly.  The goal was given despite some consternation, clearly a lesson learned there.

Overall a fighting display which gave useful match practice to potential first-teamers, such as Alan O'Hare , Georges Santos, Jamie Jackson and Josh Law. It will also have provided valuable experience to Dave Bentley's crop of youngsters, of which there were nine players involved.

Also in the Leeds side were two new signings, former Owls goalkeeper David Lucas and former Newcastle centre-back Paul Huntington, as well as midfieder Curtis Weston and Ian Westlake.
