As a young footballer trying to make the grade, Peter was one of those featured in "Blue Heaven," a television series centred around the Glasgow Rangers club and its youth team. He suffered a terrible cruciate ligament injury at Ibrox and underwent knee construction surgery but was released a couple of years later and given a chance to resurrect his career with Kilmarnock. He came through a trial period to earn a full-time contract, and even played his way back into the Scottish Under-21 reckoning.
Peter was used as an attacking full-back and a conventional left-sided midfielder with Killie, where he showed ball-playing ability and played in the 2007 Scottish League Cup final. Although offered a contract extension at Rugby Park he chose to come south to try to break through into English football, and Chesterfield moved in after Peter had trials with Bradford City, offering him a one-year deal in August 2007.
