Paul Shaw

Paul how do you feel about signing for the Spireites

I am delighted! Obviously I have been speaking to the manager for a few weeks now and they made an offer and I am delighted to sign.

Why Chesterfield?

Because they have done well over the last couple of years and had an excellent season last season but fell away towards the end. But I see Chesterfield as a club that is going forward and hopefully we can push for promotion next season. I did have other options but after meeting with manager Roy McFarland and assisitant manager Lee Richardson I was very impressed and always hoped that this would be my destination.  It was a simple choice really.

So you started at Arsenal

I started at Arsenal played a few games and moved onto to Millwall then Gillingham then onto Sheffield United, so I have been around a bit. I really started League football at Millwall and then moved onto Gillingham for £450,000 and played in the Championship before Neil Warnock brought me to Bramall Lane. I did not play that many games for Neil as he likes centre forwards and had a number on the books, probably to keep them on their toes. With my two year contract running out, I joined Rotherham United in January because I needed first team football. Alan Knill managed to keep Rotherham up but that's over now and I have joined Chesterfield.

Chesterfield has a mix of young and experienced players and Roy McFarland obviously feels your experience is needed in the squad?

I hope so, I have followed the Club for a while and played against them last season and it was obvious there are a number of good young talented players at the Club. I think all good sides have a mix of young players and experienced players

What do you think about League One?

I think it's a league which requires teams to be organised and if you have a bit of luck combined with a bit of talent you can do well.

What will you bring to the side?

I have been labelled as either a striker or a midfielder but I feel I am better playing up front. I like holding onto the ball and passing but obviously like to score goals, which I hope I can do, plus create a few goals as well. I am also looking forward to playing with the Chief, I guess he must be in his late forties by now (lol), but he's a great lad to have around with his know-how.

So what about your home life?

Myself and the wife and two boys have settled in well since my move to Sheffield United, so it's great that we can stay in the area for longer and maybe that's unusual for a southerner.

Any message for the supporters?

Hopefully I will bring some hard work and enthusiasm to enable the side to push for promotion and finish in the top six.

Welcome to Chesterfield

Thank you
