I ALWAYS WANT TO WIN
PHIL Picken spoke to SPIREITES WORLD shortly after signing a two year contract. Read parts of the eight minute audio right here.
Well Phil you have signed a two year deal with
I'm very pleased to have signed and really just want to get going.
Do you realise how popular a signing this is with the supporters?
Yes they have supported me very well in my time here and I hope it can continue because I have enjoyed my expereince on loan with Chesterfield last season. Manchester United thought it was best for me to move on to further my career and hope to get back to the top in a few years time.
Roy McFarland describes you has a player who would die for the cause.
I always want to win! I am not a loser! and I will put everything into the club to try and achieve that and hopefully we can go on and get a top six finish. It was disappointing after being around the top six for so long then too many draws, some bad results and then injuries seriously knocked us last season. But I am sure we will be back next season and will have learnt from our mistakes.
You seem to be quite versatile, what's your best position?
Anyhere the Gaffer puts me, I don't mind as long as I am playing. I have played most of my games at left back and I enjoy getting forward when I can get down the flanks. But I really enjoyed the game in midfield against
Some supporters suggest you could be a future midfield boss and captain for Chesterfield.
I hope so, I hope so very much. I hope we can get into the championship doing it and in the top levels doing it. I hope one day that will come true as I like to think of myself as a leader and as a winner, so I don't see why not.
How did Roy McFarland sell the club to you?
He didn't need to really. I have had chats with him and played here long enough and I know the score. I know that Roy McFarland and Lee Richardson, Rico, have been good to me, speaking to me and talking me through the game to see what I need to improve on. They have given me the chance, coming on loan from Manchester United to show what I can do, so I could only sign for Chesterfield really.
How much of a deterrent is it coming to an old ground like Saltergate?
I don't think it matters as long as the response on the pitch is good and we have the backing of the supporters and they get behind us and the manager, that's all you need really Obviously it will be great to have a new stadium in the next couple of years and I think that will improve the club as a whole and hopefully we can progress as a club.
Any plans for the summer?
I will be going regularly to the gym to keep fit and have a couple of holidays planned, one with my girlfriend and then somewhere with the lads. But I will take it steady I have heard about the gaffer's pre-season cross country runs when we come back, he loves his runs I hear, but I am sure I will be okay. To be truthful I can't wait to get back and get that winning feeling again.
Are you watching Big Brother
The girlfriends in to it so we watch every night and I think Pete's favourite to win but there's some crazy people in there, that Imogen's a bit of alright though.
Well congratulations on signing for
Thank you, I hope it is the start of very successul career. I believe in my ability and I hope I can go far.
Congratulations and a warm welcome to Saltegate, again.
