I'M GOING TO HAVE SOME HAPPY TIMES HERE
SPIREITES WORLD subscribers listened to new signing STEVE FLETCHER's first interview with new club CHESTERFIELD. Read the highlights here.
Well I'm talking to Steve Fletcher "Fletch" who's just signed for Chesterfield, how did it all come about?
It happened a couple of days after I was told I was being released by Bournemouth and it could have only been in the press a couple of hours and I got a call from Lee. From the minute I spoke to him he was enthusiastic to have me. I had a few other offers and I was honest with Lee and I had to make the right decision for my family. Lee made me feel like a million dollars and he's a top bloke and I think I'm going to have some happy times here.
You've been at Bournemouth for fifteen years. Difficult decision to move on?
Yes it was, I felt that I could have gone on forever there, but time moves on and my options were open and this is the one I was most impressed with and I've made the right decision.
You're actually from the North-East.
Yes, Hartlepool or the Monkey Hangers as they are called. I had four years at Hartlepool and then left to join Bournemouth where I played under Mel Machin, Sean O'Driscoll and latterly Kevin Bond, not too many managers over a fifteen year period. It was quite big move for me to go there as a 19 year old but I settled in well. I've married a Bournemouth lass and have two lovely girls and we've talked about my move up here and there are so many positives that outweigh the negatives with a move here.
What's your attributes?
I can't do the hundred metres in ten seconds that's for sure, I guess I'm a old fashioned centre forward. I played here for Hartlepool on my debut and I scored the winner in 1990-1991 and played against Andy Morris and we beat you three-two. I am what I am, as I've got older my game hasn't changed much since my mid twenties and I'm a big striker who creates goals for the other players.
You'll be aware of Jamie Ward and Jack Lester?
Yes I know Jack having played against him, I don't know Jamie that much but Jack is a quality player that I'm pleased to be playing with. And that's a big achievement to get the quality to the squad. It can only be good for the club and hopefully we can get a good start and stay amongst the pack and there is no reason why we can't bounce back up and I'd love to do that with Chesterfield.
You've just been to the Isle of Wight Festival?
Yes I went to see a few bands and I've got a croaky voice from shouting at some of the bands, especially my favourites the Rolling Stones. I had a good relaxing time. As an interest I have recently taken up the guitar but just for fun. I am now aware that Lee Richardson plays a bit but I doubt we will be getting up a band.
Hopefully promotion next season?
Yes, promotion is a great achievement in whatever division and I hope to do that with Chesterfield
