Nicknamed "Bruno" for an alleged resemblance to the British champion boxer Frank Bruno, Andy's sheer presence was enough to unsettle defences on many occasions and, despite his height, he often appeared more dangerous on the ground, where his size and unrehearsed trickery made him very difficult to dispossess.

He was often misunderstood by referees, though, who sometimes seemed unable to accept that a man of his build can be competitive but clean. Rumoured to have cost £500 when moving from Rotherham to Chesterfield in January 1988, Andy became a crowd favourite from the start, He suffered bad luck with injuries that led to his missing perhaps as many games as he played in his years at the Rec. A hat-trick against Cardiff in '88-9 stands out as one of his finest performances.

1997-8, his testimonial season, was sadly typical of Andy's luck: he spent all but five games of that term recovering after three operations on a knee. Nottingham Forest provided the opposition for Andy's testimonial match, in the 1998-9 pre-season. After signing a series of short-term contracts while he proved his fitness, Andy negotiated a move to Rochdale and completed the move on December 22nd., 1998, thus ending an association with the Spireites that lasted very nearly eleven years.

In the summer of 2000 this popular and hardworking man was chosen to replace Nicky Law as the club's Football in the Community Officer, and he continues to serve Chesterfield in that capacity to this day.
