`George' (so called because of an alleged resemblance to actor Brian Murphy's character in the television sitcom`George and Mildred') was an immensely popular player at Chesterfield in a career that was sadly blighted by injury. He broke a leg twice; once, in front of the Kopagainst Yorkin December '89, and again, in a reserve comeback in February '94.In between times, he suffered blows that might have been hilarious, in a Norman Wisdom film.Rehabilitating from the first break, he was knocked off a bike and damaged his back: in the summer of '93 he ruptured his achilles tendon walking up stairs at home.

His career stalled a little after the first break, but Chris McMenemy recalled him to the side in March '91 and he began playing the best football of his Saltergate career. As an emergency measure, he began playing in a left wing-back position in a 1991 pre-season friendly and performed so well that he played much of the rest of his football there. The defensive aspects of his game were never strong points, but he was able to get forward in a pacy, swashbuckling fashion that regularly caused consternation in opposition defences.
After his second break he began to assist with youth team coaching and made another comeback, with a few reserve games at the end of '94-5, but it was clear that he would never recover full fitness.Retiring from full-time football, Steve became a postman, but kept up an involvement with the game by working for Derby County at the Rams Foundation. While he was never the most technically accomplished player, Steve had an attitude to the game and the club that struck a chord with every fan, and many felt sorry that his career should have ended under such circumstances.
