JACK SET FOR POST-WAR RECORD
The Star & Green Un's Phil Tooley, who also contributes to the website and matchday magazine, revealed in The Star today that striker Jack Lester is set for a post-war Spireites speed scoring record. His article is reproduced here.
Jack Lester's goal in the 4-3 home defeat against Rochdale on Wednesday was his 19th of the season. The former Blades striker is within a whisker of becoming Chesterfield's first 20 goal man since Steve Norris back in 1993-94.
Norris hit a total of 23 goals that season, hitting the magic 20 mark at the start of March when he bagged a brace in a 3-0 win against Carlisle United. It seems certain that Lester will reach the milestone significantly sooner than that, his next opportunity being in Monday's Sky TV match against in form Hereford United (Kick Off 7.45pm).
Back in 1980-81, when Spireites played a record breaking 65 games in league and cup, Alan Birch top scored with 24. He reached No.20 on Valentine's Day, 14th February, so Lester has half a dozen opportunities to score to beat that timescale.
All-time top scorer Ernie Moss hit 20 on February 8th in 1973-74 so his real speed target will be Bill Sowden's 1955-56 haul.
The man signed from Manchester City bagged 33 in that season with his 20th coming in an amazing 8-0 home win against Crewe Alexandra on 28th January. His 20th was the first goal in a hat-trick. Jack has just two games to beat that, Wycombe Wanderers (away) a week tomorrow, his last chance.
Harry Clifton, January 17th 1938, Maurice Dando, December 28th 1935, Colin Cook, January 1st 1934, Jim Bullock, January 4th 1930 and the all time quickest Spireite to reach 20, Jimmy Cookson, who hit that mark on November 13th 1926, can't be overhauled, but a post war record is certainly on the cards for the man signed in the summer on a free from Nottingham Forest.
Whenever he hits 20, it will be a personal best for the 32 year old who's never reached that figure before.
