The Spireites have helped launch the latest Keep Britain Tidy campaign, which is targeting fast food rubbish by reminding residents not to be a 'dirty pig'. The Chesterfield Borough Council campaign was launched today with the help of Chesterfield FC players Barry Roche and Felix Bastians.

Posters with a man and woman transformed into pigs, because of their dirty littering habits, and the slogan, What does dropping litter make you look like? aims to bring home the key message.

Councillor Ian Openshaw, Chesterfield's Lead Member on Sustainability and Environmental Services, said:

"Chesterfield Borough Council is trying to raise the awareness of the problems caused with food litter and are lucky enough to be part of the national campaign.

"We hope that raising the profile will help make Chesterfield cleaner and greener place to live and work."

Fast food rubbish has been a persistent problem on the streets for the past six years, with burger boxes and chip wrappings now found on nearly a quarter of streets nationally.

This type of litter contributes significantly to Chesterfield Borough Council's cleaning budget.

The council is now working with local fast food outlets to target 18-24 year olds who are the worst litterbugs of fast food rubbish.

Most fast food litter is dropped late at night; once the pubs and clubs have shut and revellers have satisfied their midnight munchies - throwing their leftovers and rubbish on the streets.

Most fast food rubbish is dropped after dark once the pubs and clubs have· shut and at lunchtime when workers head out of a bite to eat, leaving their litter.

You can be fined up to £80 for dropping any litter including bits of food· like half eaten sandwiches, apple cores and your lunch leftovers.

Meanwhile, Barry Roche and Felix Bastians had a simple message: "Put your rubbish in the bin."

The Keep Britain Tidy campaign is run by ENCAMS which is an independent charity. It is also responsible for the Blue Flag beach awards, Eco-Schools and the Cleaner Safer Greener Network.
