Chesterfield's poor home form continued on Saturday as Morecambe scored in the first, and then in the very last minute, through a superb volley from Simon Grand ,to snatch three points from Chesterfield, writes sports reporter Ben Roe (pictured here with Jack Lester).Earlier Jack Lester had netted a second half brace to put the Spireites in front.
In the first ever league meeting between the two sides, Morecambe struck the first blow in the first minute due to poor defending by Chesterfield. A free kick lofted to the back post was headed across goal and scrambled in by striker Wayne Curtis.
Chesterfield looked to have hit straight back in the second minute when the Shrimps goalkeeper Steven Drench brought down Jack Lester in the penalty box. The goalkeeper received a booking for his troubles and Jamie Ward stepped up to take the spot kick but Drench made amends with a fantastic save diving to his left, steering the ball around the post.
Penalty miss!
The Spireites continued to frustrate the home crowd with numerous missed chances, Lester and Ward the main culprits. They came closest with Picken, Lowry and Lester all going close. Lowry went agonizingly close with a shot across the goal in the 22nd minute. Phil Picken was denied by a smart save by Drench on 28 minutes, before Jack Lester hit the cross-bar four minute before half time, making it the 10th time Chesterfield have hit the word work this season.
Jamie Ward, who looked backed to full fitness linked up with League 2's top scorer Jack Lester to help terrorise the Morecambe defence all afternoon.
Despite Chesterfield's dominance Morecambe held a persistent threat on the counter attack. Morecambe's player of the match Craig Stanley nearly put the visitors two up inside 5 minutes but he fired his shot straight at Barry Roche and Ryan Cresswell hit the post with Morecambe's only other clear chance of the first half.
Confusion between Roche and Kovacs nearly gifted the Shrimps an easy goal but Roche recovered well to parry the ball away from the feet of Curtis.
Danger man Stanley caught the home defence napping four minutes after the break but was once again denied by a smart stop by the legs of Roche.
Chesterfield were soon on level terms through top scorer Jack Lester. His smart turn inside the box gave him enough room to fire a low shot past Drench on 55 minutes.
Lester and Ward continued to pose a threat before loan signing Felix Bastinas delivered a wonderful cross, which was met by Lester. He expertly headed the ball into the ground and in the back of the net for his second of the game.
Top scorer
Chesterfield looked certain to be taking all three points but conceded a suspect free kick for handball by Peter Leven. Consequently they failed to deal with a long free kick with the ball falling to defender Simon Grand who struck a superb volley from around 20 yards, which flew into Roche's bottom left hand corner. This once again broke the hearts of the home crowd. Grand however, sent the 193 Morecambe fans into ecstasy as they snatched a point from a game that they looked to be leaving empty handed.
After the game Chesterfield boss Lee Richardson disappointingly said "We were clearly head and shoulders above the opposition today and we've clearly gifted them two points through basic naivety and stupidity." He added, "We showed character to come back and completely dominate the game and miss numerous, numerous chances."
The Spireites manager also said "We've now wasted four points from the last two home games."
Richardson's opposite number Sammy McIlroy was delighted with the result saying, "We knew it was going to be tough, and we got a great start and got a goal up". The former Manchester United man also said, "When you come to grounds like this it's great to go away with something."
Man of the match Jack Lester said afterwards "I was pleased to get a couple of goals today but I think we should have a few more points on the board."
