FA CUP FIRST ROUND PROPER
731 clubs were in at the start of the competition; 698 ties had been played to get this far. Phil Robinson's Stafford Rangers were still in the pot: so were Gainsborough Trinity, probably the most "local" of non-league sides to us. Ex-League sides were well represented with the likes of York City and Workington.
When the balls came out, Hereford got the plum of Leeds United; Lincoln got a belting local one with Nottingham Forest and potential banana skins were slipped the way of Rotherham United, Mansfield Town and Notts County. We were given a home tie against recent cup adversaries, Tranmere Rovers.
