Matlock Town 1 Chesterfield 5

Plenty of goals and plenty of ex Spireites on display. Adam Smith (10), Josh Law (pen, 48), Aaron Downes (54), triallist Peter Leven (83) and youth teamer Dan Gray (pen, 88) scored for Lee Richardson's team whilst one time Saltergate midfielder Stephen Warne belted home an excellent 20 yard half volley (59) to peg The Gladiators back to 1-3 down.

Warne played alongside fellow ex Chesterfield men Andy Richmond and Steve Taylor whilst Mark Smith came on as a sub.

And there was silverware too, the Spireites retained the newly named Banner Jones Cup just in time for it to be displayed at Sunday's Gala Day and they had the new third kit, red with white trim, road tested for the first time.

Smith opened the scoring after 10 minutes, latching on to a through ball and using his pace to get to get to the ball first and place beyond Richmond.

The second goal didn't come until early in the second half, Law hitting the roof of the net with a penalty after Jamie Jackson had been floored. Law, a replacement for Gareth Davies, hobbled off near the end but manager Lee Richardson diagnosed only cramp for the young midfielder. Gareth said after the game he thought he'd broken his toe. An X-Ray was on the cards.

Newly appointed team captain Aaron Downes stabbed home the third after Richmond had scooped away a corner kick before Warne's cracker.

Leven's deft touch registered the fourth on 83 and the former Rangers youngster, now 23, a Kilmarnock player for the last three years, got the vote of approval from Richardson. "He's a wide or central midfielder who has the ability to play anywhere across midfield, obviously a good player that scored a good goal and generally fitted in very well. I think he's a good player but we'll have to wait and see if we'll see more of him, we'll have to see where we'll go with that. As a manager you want as many good players as possible so if we can work something out, then I'd be interested in doing something with him."

The Spireites ended the scoring with a second penalty after a foul on youth team player Thomas Cooper-Richards, fellow scholar Dan Gray stepped up to place the 12 yard kick beyond Richmond to make it 5-1 for the visitors.

Jamie Lowry was awarded the Sponsors' Man of the Match plaudits in a game that saw Barry Roche return after tonsillitis and have to make some sharp saves early on to deny Taylor and Barraclough.

Chesterfield's next pre-season game is on Saturday at Conference side York City, Kick Off 3pm.
