Kovacs repelled a cross by Paterson with a firm volleyed clearance as a rare glimpse of the summer sun shone down on us then Jordan (punch) and skipper Downes (header) had to intervene to clear the danger as Iron started brightly.

Youga cleared ahead of Lester after Fletcher's square ball found his co-striker in what was the Spireites first raid and they quickly won the game's first corner. Robertson's kick was headed goalwards by Fletcher and keeper Murphy had to be quick to block Lester, taking plenty of stick as an ex Grimsby player. The loose ball fell to Fletcher whose stab forwards deflected out for another corner that was cleared quickly to Hayes whose pinpoint cross found Paterson, but his half volley was driven into the side netting. Not a bad opening three minutes!

The familiar Kevan Hurst passed for Hayes but his effort was blocked

An O'Hare throw found Fletcher, his shirt being rearranged by Crosby, and Robertson nipped in to head the kick on but it failed to trouble Murphy, then big Fletch drove a long ranger just wide as the game flowed freely.

Crosby, never one to shirk, scythed down Lester, 25 out and dead central, but the fouled player's shot was always high and wide. He then shot just wide after a snap turn following Fletcher's head down. United are two divisions higher - you wouldn't know!

Goodwin's cross was put out by Davies for United's first corner and Jordan had to be alert to block from Hayes but the striker was adjudged to have been offside.

Hurst's rifle cross in from the left touchline caught everyone bu surprise and thumped the bar and in the aftermath Youga's shot was turned out for a corner by Jordan as United stepped it up, though a quick Roberston break won a left wing corner, Davies took but Iron cleared.

Butler's header from a corner deflected off a defender but Jordan was positioned well to react to the change in flight to catch the ball safely as the game ebbed and flowed.

Davies was doing well against his pal Hurst and O'Hare had the measure of Forte on the other flank but the Spireites were lacking width in their attacking, Robertson occasionally burst forwards on the left but Niven, on the right, had little change from Youga when he had the ball.

A deep free kick from the left fell for Forte at the far post but Jordan's foot interveved - corner - that saw Jordan save from Baraclough.

Spireites took the lead in the 31st minute. Lester crossed from the right, the ball found FLETCHER who controlled well and drove a low shot beyond Murphy for his first Chesterfield goal.

Big Fletch scores

Fletcher put Lester through - no flag - but Murphy blocked the striker's firm shot.

The wall did its job to block a Goodwon free kick - but illegally -  Picken was abjudged to have encroached. Re-take and Picken again in the flight but the ball deflected over him to HAYES who rammed the ball in from six yards in the 37th minute.

Kovacs and Robertson had to head out as United tried to capitalise on their goal as half time approached.

Downes deflected a Paterson shot out for a corner after a Chesterfield raid broke down due to a great defensive tackle by Hurst, but the flag kick caused no bother for the Blues.

Janos Kovacs was the eye catcher for Chesterfield in the first half and Gareth Davies looked solid at full back. Lee Richardson will no doubt be demanding more from midfield after the break.

A decent, level 45 with a scoreline that's about right.

HALF TIME: IRON 1 SPIREITES 1

No HT subs for us but United introduce Marcus Williams and Cameroonian triallist Alex Mowfor.

An early corner for the visitors, who are watched by 152 travelling fans, but United clear. A low key half early on though Robertson goes for the spectacular, chipping towards goal from 45 yards, but he's too high.

Hayes produces some neat footwork and a shot that Jordan saves as Lowry and Smith prepare to come on, then Mowfor sticks one just wide from 25. Davies and Lowry make way. Lowry's a straight swap, Smith goes to LMF with Robertson moving to left back.

Hayes, the pick of the Scunny pack, shoots just wide as we wait for the game to take off again.

A pinpoint crossfield ball from Smith found Niven who saw Youga nick the ball of his toe at the crucial moment, Smith then won, and delivered, a corner and both Kovacs and Lester were inches away from getting a telling touch on it. Smith then drifted a free kick in, it was cleared, as Lee Richardson's men began to enjoy some possession.

Spireites re-took the lead on 61. Robertson fed LESTER, who had two men infront of him. He shimmied into space but his shot was blocked, he was alert though to the rebound and deftly put the ball into the top corner, a quality finish.

Iron 1 Spireites 2

Hurst forced an excellent save from Jordan from 20 yards, Downes headed the resulting corner clear as the hosts tried to get on level terms again.

Livewire Hayes was replaced by Taylor and Lester saw Jackson take over from him.

Kovacs blocked a decent cross from Hurst before The Chief came on for Fletcher just aahead of a fluked Iron equaliser. The ball was played high and wide to FORTE well outside the left of the box with Downes, the ball bounced and the United man stuck a foot out and saw the ball fly high and drift above Jordan, hit the inside of the post and trickle in with 73 gone.

Iron 2 Spireites 2

Law and Shaw came on for Niven and Winter.

Paterson's quick shot on the turn was caught by Jordan, whose been the busier keeper as we entered the final 10.

Hurst put a cross in that drifted wide and Taylor scuffed his shot on the break, easy meat for Jordan, but Scunny are ending the stronger.

Picken left the scene with three to go, obviously with something bothering him, but no more outfield subs, so 10 on the park for Spireites.

Patterson's low shot saved to his left by Jordan on 89 before Law's goalbound shot deflected by a defender and Murphy scrambled it away before Allison could pounce.

Lowry conceded a corner in injury time, Hurst took but Mowfor car parked it and the whistle blew.

A useful workout against the Championship newcomers.
