Chesterfield made two changes to the starting line-up that lost to MK Dons last Monday: David Dowson and Jamie Winter were replaced by Jamie Ward and Steve Fletcher.
The fans observed a minute's silence for 16-year old Nick Walker, a promising footballer and Rotherham fan who was killed in a road accident earlier this week.
Rotherham went forward from the kick off but Chesterfield countered as both sides set about the match with purpose. Lester tested Warrington on 3 but was flagged offside as he shot. Holmes and Harrison closed in to rob Kovacs and Roche was forced to save but the offside flag again stopped play. Breaking to the other end Lester got onto Roche's clearance but blazed over the bar.
Holmes shot across goal after breaking up the visitors' right on 8. The Millers were winning the midfield and having the better of the game but were unable to find the control to make the most of their greater share of possession.
Tonge's cross to O'Grady gave the ex-Leicester man time to bring the ball down, but Picken recovered well to block the shot. Hudson shot powerfully and Roche saved well on 18. The visitors played the ball out of defence on 21 and found Ward, whose shot didn't really test Warrington.
Yates got through onto a Downes back header and Hartley bundled him over on the edge of the box, on 28. Hartley was yellow-carded and Peter Holmes curled the free kick nicely round the wall and into the top corner of the net to give Rotherham the lead.
Peter Leven went down injured on 31, having caught an elbow, and seemed dazed; he was stretchered off and replaced by Winter a couple of minutes later. Fletcher was fouled on the corner of the penalty area on 35 but Lowry's cross was headed away by Joseph. Ward beat Tonge and took the ball to the edge of the box but Yates's tackle ended to run. A good build-up from Rotherham saw Yates cross to O'Grady on 38 but his header flashed wide of the post.
Joseph extended the lead on 44 after latching on to Phil Picken's clearance from another free kick.
Rotherham opened the second half more brightly, with Yates's snap shot fizzing wide. Roche had to dive to tip a Derek Holmes header over after the Millers forward was given too much leeway in the box.
Lloyd Kerry was booked for a lunging tackle on Hudson on 51. Rotherham were dominant now and won a couple of corners, while successfully defending the visitors' attempts at the counter-attack. Kovacs got a fine tackle in on 53, to deny O'Grady when he looked to be through.
Downes came forward and shot, forcing Warrington to save late on 60. Coughlan got in to deny Lester at the expense of a corner. Ryan Taylor replaced Jamie Yates on 61. Chesterfield found some urgency but still lacked the quality necessary to test Rotherham.
Picken's neat cross on 69 invited the header from Fletcher but it flashed over as Warrington came to challenge. WARD pulled a goal back after Coughlan's tackle missed; he controlled the ball on his chest and rifled home with fifteen minutes remaining.
Lowry's corner found Kovacs but he couldn't direct his header under Derek Holmes' pressure. Lester took the ball off Coughlan as the home crowd became restless; Picken got the ball in but it wouldn't come down for Fletcher and the ball was cleared as the Spireites put 75 minutes of indifference behind them and went at the home side. Cooper replaced Lowry on 83. In the event, though, they couldn't create enough to rescue a point and threatened to get caught on the counter as they went forward. Rotherham thus recorded their first Football League "double" over Chesterfield since the invention of television.
