THE Chief and not Reuben Hazell pulled a goal back according to Roy McFarland but the Bees had the last first and last laughs with goals from Joe Kuffour to end their 22 game run without a win against a sorry and bedraggled looking Spireites.
Roy McFarland restored Reuben Hazell to the starting line up from injury at the expense of Janos Kovacs who dropped down to the bench. Paul Shaw also returned to partner Caleb Folan for Colin Larkin who failed to even make the bench, and so fielded what on paper at least would have been many supporters first choice team
Ex Spireite Nathan Abbey, making his Brentford debut on emergency loan with Bee's keepers Clark Masters and Stuart Nelson injured, launched a long ball downfield and Calum Willock flicked the ball on past a rather static right hand side of Spireite back line. Joe Kuffour reacted quickly and latched onto the ball to hammer home a low drive passed a helplessly exposed Barry Roche for his eighth goal of the season on seventy seconds and the home side could not have got off to a better start.
The Spireites showed plenty of effort but the home side with renewed confidence were proving no push overs. Numerous passes from both sides went astray and Nathen Abbey it has to be said had a very easy first 45 minutes in the host's goal. Remaining largely untroubled until forced into action on 34th minutes when he saved all to easily from a very out of sorts Caleb Folan header, he also denied Paul Shaw while Paul Hall fired into the side netting from a very tight angle
Brentford skipper Kevin O'Connor went close to doubling the lead but curled a free kick narrowly wide. In as half most Spireites will want to forget
Half Time 1-0
The clouds opened in the second half and the Spireites with backed by a gale force wind but still failed to get past the home defence. Folan should have done better on 58 minutes. Folan ran onto a long ball and fired in a low shot but Abbey saved easily. Paul Shaw also gave Abbey some catching practice with a tame effort from 20 yards on 65 minutes. The Spireites only tactic was the persistent long throw aimed for the head of Aaron Downes but they were meat and drink for the 6ft 3 Matty Haywood and company all afternoon.
With the rain now torrential Kuffour surprisingly doubled Brentford's lead on 67 minutes. Paul Brooker slipped a pass through the
The Bee's Simon Cox fired a free kick wide but with gale-force winds making it virtually impossible for the home side to get out of there own half the Spireites finally got a foothold in the game. Kevan Hurst in particular was trying to get behind the Bee's defence switching flacks and causing the home side a lot of problems.
Reuben Hazell fouled Willcock and saw a yellow card and John Mousinhio apparently for speaking out of turn also saw yellow from referee Thorpe. On 70 minutes Alex Bailey pulled a thigh muscle and looks set to miss the New Years Day fixture and was quickly replaced by Adam Smith. Wayne Allison and Gareth Davies soon followed Smith onto the pitch in exchange for the two Paul's Shaw and Hall.
Gareth Davies was fouled by Matty Haywood on 78 minutes and Kevan Hurst's well flighted free kick ended up in Nathan Abbey's goal to give the Spireites a remote chance of a point. At the time it looked like Reuben Hazell had struck home but there was a distinct lack of celebration from the soggy pale blue shirted Spireites. Roy McFarland later stated that Wayne Allison had got the final touch.
The Spireites tried to press for an equaliser and won another free kick in a similar position to the one they had just scored from more of the same please, seemed to be order of the day. Sadly this time Kevan Hurst took the kick short and the chance to test the nervy Brentford defence was wasted. Further pressure came to nothing through a combination of poor passing control and a semi waterlogged pitch all sadly meant the Abbeys goal remained untested barring a Mark Allott shot that went well wide and Adam Smith forced Abbey into a pair of low saves with long range efforts. Bee's caretaker boss Scott Fitzgerald replaced
Referee Mike Thorpe brought the game to a halt after five minutes of stoppage time and the Spireites sorry Christmas continues and Brentford for the first time in 119 day picked up a three points in what Roy McFarland described on Thursday as a must win game for the Spireites. Sadly that was not very evident on the pitch and a very nervy Brentford side coasted to victory in the end.
There will be no match action photos for this game Tina failed a late fitness test
