SCOTT SELLARS
The Spireites assistant manager spoke to the Green Un's Phil Tooley after last week's win at Rochdale. The article from Saturday 8th March's edition of the Sports Paper is reproduced here.
Assistant Manager Scott Sellars has now been with the club for a month and is once again enjoying working in a fierce, competitive league environment.
Having been working with the Academy at Sheffield United since packing in the playing side of the game, the 42 year-old Sheffield born ex Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers, Huddersfield Town, Aarhus (Denmark), Mansfield Town and England U23 midfielder is delighted to be working with men on a regular basis again; "It's good. It's made me realise just how much I've missed this side of it.
"Working with youth players is a good way of learning and it's great to help develop young players, see them come through, but the Saturday to Saturday routine and winning games is something I've really missed since I finished playing."
Compared to the kids, Sellars confirms; "There's a lot more pressure, it's a lot more hair-raising but it's something that I wanted to do and I'm really pleased I've had the opportunity to step up and do it."
Sellars moved to Saltergate when previous No.2 Alan Knill accepted the challenge to manage his former club Bury, and he's not dwelled too much on what went before he arrived; "I can't really say if I've brought anything new because I don't know what went on before but working with Lee, and we work closely on the training ground, we've been working very hard for the last few weeks, trying to make us a bit more difficult to get at, more solid. The lads have really responded to that and the two results over the last two weeks have been good and the performances before that had been decent as well."
The man who last played a football league game for Stags against Colchester United in November 2002, a game that saw him last just six minutes before injury got the better of him, is well positioned to be able to view the performance of Chesterfield's three recent young loan signings; "The two boys from Sunderland and Lloyd Kerry from Sheffield United are young players. When you bring them in, you're not always sure how they're going to cope with it but at Rochdale they were excellent.
"David Dowson gives us a lot of work rate up there, he's got great enthusiasm and is a constant threat. Lloyd has been great in the three games he's played, he breaks things up really well and passes the ball well and Peter Hartley is a good defender. These are young boys with a lot more potential to come as well."
Back to back 1-0 wins before last night's home match with Lincoln City have lifted some of the gloom that had been around Saltergate and the new faces have helped engender the new found confidence of late; "Over the last two weeks we've had twenty pro's to work with and that's been great for us. We've done a lot of the work we've wanted to do and it puts pressure on the squad as a whole. You only need to look at the bench to see that with Steve Fletcher, Jamie Ward, Derek Niven and Alan O'Hare on there, the squad is very strong and long may it continue. The young boys have taken there chance and now the people on the outside have got to do a bit extra to get back in the team."
