IT WASN'T JUST BECAUSE OF THE SYSTEM
Spireites Manager LEE RICHARDSON pinpointed a number of reasons for his side's heavy defeat at Grimsby on Saturday. Read the post-match interview highlights here
We tried a system that we felt would cause them problems, but it probably caused us more, but forget systems, because if you don't compete and deal with runners off the ball, if you follow the ball and not the man, then it makes it difficult.
The first turning point was another dive by their centre-forward. His dive at Saltergate was excellent but this one was even better, and the referee bought it and gave the penalty. In fairness to them, they could have been in front at that time, but it is galling to concede that type of goal. We gifted them the second, which is always going to make life difficult.
We got to grips with it better after that and had two or three chances to nick a goal before half time. We changed it at half time but were weak in the tackle before conceding the third goal. At 3-0 down after an hour it looked like we had no chance, but the way we played in the last half hour gave us a chance. With ten minutes to go we looked likely to cap a magnificent fight-back but we concede a second penalty. Roche is adamant that he hardly touched him. The young lad who dived first - fair play to him, that's what strikers do. He got up, laughing all over his face. The second one, I'm not sure about; the ref was better placed for that but was about forty yards away for the first one.
Referees are far too easily influenced by a fervent crowd and it sticks in the throat because it happened at Saltergate. They've done us twice, in my opinion, unfairly.
The team selection was not so much forced upon me, but there were other factors that prevented me starting with perhaps the team that I would like to have done. Jamie Ward came back from international duty with tight hamstrings and I wasn't going to risk him. Kevin's just joined and not had much football, so I didn't think that throwing him straight in was the right thing to do.
I'll take criticism and take it right on the chin. It didn't work in the first half an hour but it wasn't just because of the system. When the players are on the pitch they have to make sure they put 110% into everything and do the basics. Stay with the man, don't follow the ball. We changed back to the
