WE HAD A BIT OF LUCK
Lee Richardson updated SPIREITES WORLD members on Chesterfields victory and the relegation to League Two. Read the highlights of the interview right here.
Well Lee a win but also relegation
We new that was a possible outcome even if we won. We are obviously pleased to have won the game but
disappointed that Rotherham couldn't have held on to win to take it to the last day of the season. But we are not relegated by events today we have been relegated because of our performance through the season. Chesterfield have been involved in ten 1-0 games and only won one of them. That's an indicator as to where our problems lie. We have had poor finishing at times and we also suffered with poor concentration at times at the back. We have seen a lot of sides come to Saltergate shut up shop and nicked a goal and hung on for a victory. That's the real reason we have been relegated is nothing to do with today
How did you win today?
We had a bit of luck the goalkeeper had a howler for the first goal. To be fair he also made a few good saves to keep the score respectable. But that little bit of luck gave us the impetus and belief and to be 2-0 up at half-time against a strong wind was a real bonus. We then took it on and got a third goal, we would have liked to have got more to give the fans more to cheer about. But we take heart that we have won a game football
Jamie Ward got two and virtually a third
He was the best player on the pitch by a mile. He's a little Jack Russell of a player never gives up always on the move and looking for opportunities to shoot and score.
Wayne Allison made a rare start
I think he did okay and he's not started for a while. He's still got a bit of gas in the tank and he will hopefully be part of the backroom staff as a player coach because he still as something to offer
People will like to see a little and large up front with somebody other than the Chief as the large
Without giving too much away we need to strengthen various parts of the team there is no hiding from that. There is still some quality in the squad but we will have to look around at what's available within our budget to get us back up at the first attempt.
Alan O'Hare and Mark Allott both back from injury
I was pleased for Alan he did well after being out for a long time after complications with his ankle. Mark Allott was excellent and we have missed him over the last four or five games. So to have them both back was a boost
Tell us about the formation
I changed things prior to the first goal I switched Jamie Lowry and Phil Picken around because I thought Jamie wasn't really getting involved. I then moved Hally over onto his more natural side and pushed Jamie Ward out slightly to the left. We then got the goal but I did have a go at them at half time for being a little bit sloppy.
What was the mood at the end of the game?
Resignation to relegation really which we new could happen even if we won. But we are still pleased that we have won the game.
Were you in touch with things at Millmoor?
I had heard Rotherham were two up perhaps they scored too early because after going two up Cheltenham would have to react to that which they clearly did by coming back to win the game.
What about the supporters
I thought both sets of supporters were fantastic and took it on the chin. Really though I am only concerned about Chesterfield supporters it's great to hear them in full voice supporting the team. What I want to say to them is that's it's a fresh start next season and our aim is strengthen the squad and to make the last full season at Saltergate a memorable one
