WE HAVE TO KEEP FIGHTING WHILE THERE IS A CHANCE
Lee - your thoughts on the game at Sixfields?
It was another game where we dominated, looked the better side, passed the ball better and did everything better than the opposition bar one thing - scoring more goals. Northampton were helped by a calamitous refereeing decision. We have to get better at what we're not good at, which is (a) finishing and (b) poor concentration at times. Apart from one in the first half Barry Roche didn't have a save to make. They had a five or ten minute period before half time which every home side is entitled to have, but we've had half a dozen decent chances - we hit the post, the keeper's made a couple of great saves, and it's the same old story. I'm sure everyone listening to this will be bored with that, but that's what it is.
There was a standing ovation by both sets of fans for the effort shown by Chesterfield's players?
I hope there was, because they were super. I can't criticise them on that. Certainly since I've been in charge, and to be fair, while Roy was, although we are in this position for lots of reasons and I know what they are: I'll hold my hands up and take responsibility for some of them, but its not all about me, or Roy, or the Chairman, or the board; there are lots of factors and I know what they are. I know I can affect some of them, and I'd like the chance to do so. Whether I get that, remains to be seen.
The inability to turn pressure into goals is the story of our season?
Absolutely. Whatever the reasons for that, I know what they are, but I don't want to go into them now, because I don't want to talk about individuals or things that are for another time. We missed a fantastic chance to go 1-0 up at Swansea before we went behind to a dubious penalty. We missed chances at Yeovil to go 1-0 up with twenty minutes to go, before conceding in injury time. We missed chances to beat Gillingham last week and Northampton today. All those games - apart from Swansea - we lost 1-0.
In previous seasons we've had the seed corn of a bank of points to fall back on, and we just weren't able to get sufficient points?
You talk as is we're officially down, but we're not. We are in a perilous position but we'll keep on fighting while there's a chance.
But the fact is that we have to win our last two and Cheltenham have to lose theirs. The odds are stacked against us, surely?
Of course they are. I'm not stupid, but there is a chance, and we have to keep fighting while there is a chance. We can still discuss why we're in this position, and that's because, as you say, we haven't taken enough points from games in which we've clearly been the more industrious and creative side.
It seemed the writing was on the wall when Jamie Ward limped off in the second half?
Jamie's hamstring tightened up and we had to get him off straight away. If you don't do that, the hamstring goes. Its too early to tell whether he'll be alright for Bradford; if we can get it loosened off during the week, he might be ok.
You'll remain positive, but the inquest will start; looking forward, people will be thinking about significant changes at the club.
