Adam Smith in action for the Spireites

The 22 year old has been recovering from tendinitis but a flare-up following a reserve game last week means that he now needs an operation to help correct the problem.

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland said: "It looked as though Adam was on the road to recovery but this latest setback means he needs a knee operation and unfortunately that could end his season prematurely."

Roy McFarland added: "Our urgent search for a player or two up front, who will make a real impact on the squad, continues."
