About 200 schools throughout Derbyshire joined schools from the USA to Australia as part of the International Walk to School Week supported by the County Council road safety team.

The Walk to School initiative aims to encourage children and parents to ditch the car and reap the benefits of walking to school.

Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member responsible for public protection and transport Councillor Walter Burrows explains, "Walking to school is an opportunity for parents to teach and develop their children's road safety skills. It is also healthy exercise and a regular way to keep fit, it reduces dependency on private cars for regular school journeys and so reduces traffic congestion especially outside schools. Walking to school also helps reduces air pollution, it is cheaper and less stressful than driving and children who walk may arrive at school more alert and aware."

Football Club managing director Mike Warner said, "Chesterfield Football Club are especially pleased to be able to get involved in this international campaign, which will give children and parents from all over the world the chance to not only benefit from the exercise but also see the difference less traffic makes to our roads and environment."
