Defender Peter Hartley (19) has been at Sunderland since 2000, where he has worked up through the youth teams and is something of a regular in the reserves.  He made his debut for Sunderland in January 2007.

Striker David Dowson (19), who has been a prolific striker for Sunderland's Under 18s and youth teams, signed a professional contract with Sunderland in the summer of 2007 and is also a regular in the reserve side.

Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "We are grateful to Sunderland manager Roy Keane for loaning out these two players as they will help provide some healthy competition in the squad."

Meanwhile, ongoing enquiries continue for an experienced central defender to add further quality and competition to the squad.

Manager Lee Richardson said: "We are determined to get our man but attempts to supplement the squad of a League Two side can be frustrating."

Three players are currently in the frame but three other potential recruits during the last couple of months decided in the end to join other clubs in higher divisions.

Lee Richardson added: "We have no control over the timing when the right players become available and it's a crowded market place where experienced players usually want to play at the highest possible level. We are also disadvantaged by the mandatory wage cap which now comes into play."
