It seems that fans' complaints about the quality of the match officials are nothing new.

In the 1945 War Cup Semi-final second leg against Manchester United the referee made a series of decisions that favoured the visitors. This included turning down two obvious
Chesterfield penalties. United won the game 1-0 to reach the final.

Such was the anger of the crowd that it was rumoured that the referee had been taken to hospital after the match and a number of fans went to the hospital at Holywell Cross to 'check on his condition'.

The Derbyshire Times refuted the hospital tale but their correspondent 'Casual' did comment on the official. "A good many of the decisions of the referee did not find favour and there was much booing which culminated in a demonstration after the game when a crowd surged round the players' entrance but the police saw to it that no harm came to the referee."

The story of this cup run as well as footage will be told at the Heritage Night on Thursday 7 February at the Olde House.  The evening is free to CFSS members with everyone welcome but asked to make a donation on the door.  The event starts at 7.30pm and will include historical footage as well as more recent triumphs and the memorabilia to go with them.
